Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Learning Experience for Cybersecurity Fundamentals
Greetings, cyber enthusiasts!
I am excited to share with you a new venture that I’ve been developing as part of my master’s thesis: an innovative iOS app named SecureMind. Drawing inspiration from the successful learning model of Duolingo, this app aims to demystify cybersecurity concepts and make them accessible to the wider public.
At its core, SecureMind focuses on mobile microlearning strategies designed to engage users and encourage the pursuit of cybersecurity knowledge. As part of my research, I invite users to voluntarily share their usage data, which will help me refine and evaluate the implementation of various features.
What You Can Expect from SecureMind
The app is structured around a series of chapters and sections, each dedicated to different cybersecurity fundamentals. Before embarking on a new chapter, users complete a short assessment to gauge their prior knowledge, with a follow-up test after completing all sections to highlight their improvement. Each section includes concise information paired with a quiz designed to reinforce comprehension.
To promote long-term retention of learned information, a dynamic library is unlocked after the completion of the first chapter. This library continues to expand as users progress, ensuring that previously covered material is readily available for review. I also share relevant cybersecurity news within the app to keep users informed about current events in the field.
Engaging and Interactive Learning
To prevent the learning experience from becoming monotonous—unlike typical video courses—I have incorporated two key gamification elements. The Security IQ system awards points for studying fundamentals, utilizing the library, and reading news articles. As users actively engage with the app, their IQ improves; however, maintaining that score requires consistent daily activity, as inactivity leads to a decline in points. Additionally, users can earn coins to customize their app experience, from altering the app icon to setting personalized titles in notifications.
Understanding that providing effective security advice can be challenging, I developed the app’s content in collaboration with the Digital Führerschein initiative, backed by the German government. The material was also thoroughly reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure its accuracy and relevance.
I encourage you to download SecureMind and embark on your journey to mastering cybersecurity! Your support will not only benefit your own learning experience but will also be invaluable to my ongoing research.
