Meet Nick Percoco: Navigating the Complex World of Cryptocurrency Security
Hello, readers! I’m excited to introduce myself—I’m Nick Percoco, the Chief Security Officer at Kraken as well as the founder of SpiderLabs at Trustwave and THOTCON, a prominent hacker conference taking place in Chicago. With over 25 years of experience in the realms of security and technology, I invite you to engage with me on a topic that is more crucial than ever: the security landscape within the cryptocurrency space.
A Journey Through Cybersecurity
As the Chief Security Officer at Kraken, a leading global digital asset exchange, my role encompasses overseeing Security, IT, and Engineering. My background includes serving as CSO at Uptake, a company focused on industrial AI, and holding the position of Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a comprehensive cybersecurity firm. My extensive experience has also allowed me to share my insights on cybersecurity challenges, malware, mobile security issues, and evolving Information Security trends at renowned conferences such as Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP. I have had the privilege to engage with key audiences, including the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.
A Lifelong Passion for Technology
My fascination with technology sparked at a young age; I began coding at just seven years old on a Timex Sinclair 1000. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, I explored the local bulletin board systems using my Commodore 64, eventually transitioning to an Intel 386 PC running Linux. This early immersion in the tech world laid the foundation for a fulfilling career in cybersecurity.
As an integral part of the Chicago hacker community for several decades, I founded THOTCON, which celebrated its 12th conference in 2023. Throughout my career, I’ve investigated some of the most significant data breaches in history, ensuring that organizations can learn from past mistakes and bolster their defenses against future threats. Over the past four years, my focus has been on developing and enhancing security programs at Kraken to safeguard our platform from the growing threats facing the cryptocurrency industry.
Engaging in a Dialogue
I’m keen to share my experiences and insights on issues related to cryptocurrency hacks, breaches, and best practices for enhancing cybersecurity. I warmly welcome your questions and encourage an open dialogue about this ever-evolving field. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or someone curious about the intricacies of secure digital transactions, I’m here to shed light on your inquiries
