10. Why Are All My Teacher’s Files Showing a “.nobu” Extension?

Title: Tackling the .nobu Ransomware Dilemma: A Teacher’s Plight

In an unfortunate turn of events, a local teacher’s laptop has fallen victim to a ransomware attack, transforming all his files with the “.nobu” extension. This incident began when he downloaded several PDFs from an unverified site, leading to a myriad of unwanted programs appearing in the Task Manager, and crucial files being rendered inaccessible.

The Situation at Hand

After recognizing the gravity of the situation, we initiated a security sweep using Malwarebytes. Unfortunately, the teacher has no backup of his vital files, and reverting to a previous system state isn’t an option. I am reaching out to the community for guidance on how to remove the .nobu extension from all affected files. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and I plan to share images of the situation for clarity.

A Focus on Critical Projects

To make matters worse, many of the compromised files are essential for his work in PCB design. The ransomware not only affected his files but also disrupted the design software he relies on, making it inoperable.

Further Discoveries

As we delve deeper into this issue, it appears that the encryption methods employed by the ransomware utilize an online key. I have tried using Emsisoft, but, regrettably, it was ineffective in recovering the files.

A Heartfelt Thanks

Much to our relief, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly supportive. The teacher, who prefers to keep a low profile, was touched to learn about the outpouring of help and empathy from others. He has a background in electronics and works at an IT firm, teaching as a secondary profession. This laptop is crucial for his projects involving PCB design, C programming, and Arduino development.

Visual Evidence of the Crisis

For those interested in the technicalities of the situation, I have attached screenshots directly taken from my phone, as typical screenshots were proving worthless:

Next Steps

Before resorting to formatting the laptop β€” which could permanently erase the data β€” I intend to explore various decryption tools in hopes of recovering the files.

Thank you to everyone who has shown support so far. Together, we strive to find a solution and restore access to this teacher’s vital work. If
