Enhancing Your XFX Speedster SWFT 319 AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT: A Thermal Upgrade Guide

If you’re embarking on a project to improve the thermal performance of your XFX Speedster SWFT 319 AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, you’re not alone. Many users are looking to optimize their GPU’s cooling efficiency, and I recently undertook this endeavor myself. Here, I’ll share my process, results, and specific measurements that might aid you in similar modifications.

Recently, I replaced the thermal pads on my graphics card and applied fresh thermal paste to the GPU core using Minus Pad 8 and PTM 7950 from Thermal Grizzly. The outcome? Remarkable! Under full load, the temperature of the hotspot decreased by a staggering 25°C. Previously, I was facing a scorching hotspot temperature of approximately 110°C (230°F), but after making these adjustments, it now peaks at just 85°C (176°F). Additionally, the general GPU temperature has stabilized around 70°C (158°F)—impressive considering this is all happening in a small form factor (SFF) case.

If you’re considering a similar upgrade, here are the specific thermal pad dimensions I utilized:

  • Left long pad: 10.8 cm × 0.8 cm
  • Two smaller squares: 1.3 cm × 1.5 cm
  • Two larger rectangles: 5.0 cm × 1.5 cm
  • Tiny gray pad: 0.8 cm × 0.7 cm
  • Right long pad: 0.8 cm × 7.5 cm

All of the pads are 1.5 mm thick, a thickness I verified with XFX support beforehand to ensure compatibility.

For the GPU core, I opted for the PTM 7950 thermal paste. This choice has undeniably contributed to the improved temperature readings I experienced.

I hope this information proves useful to you and expedites your research process. Just a side note: I chose not to replace the two small thermal pads on the back of the card. These were thicker than my replacement pads and, based on their position, likely didn’t contribute significantly to heat dissipation.

Best of luck with your modding journey! Your graphics card will surely appreciate the attention, and with advancements on the horizon, such as the 60-series, it’s the perfect time to enhance your setup.

  1. Thank you for sharing your detailed thermal upgrade process for the XFX Speedster SWFT 319 AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. It’s great to see such thorough insights that can help others optimize their GPU cooling.

If you’re planning to undertake similar modifications, here are some additional tips that might be helpful:

    • Ensure proper cleaning: Before applying new thermal paste or pads, thoroughly clean the GPU surface with isopropyl alcohol (preferably 90% or higher). This helps to remove old thermal compounds and ensures optimal thermal transfer.
    • Use quality thermal pads and paste: You already mentioned using Minus Pad 8 and PTM 7950—both are excellent choices, but always verify compatibility and manufacturer recommendations for your specific GPU model.
    • Double-check pad sizing: Precise measurements are crucial for effective contact. Since you’ve confirmed the thickness with XFX support, ensure the pads are snug but not compressed excessively.
    • Monitor temperatures post-upgrade: Use tools like MSI Afterburner, HWMonitor, or GPU-Z to track the temps under various loads and ensure stability and safety.
    • Proceed with caution: When opening the GPU, be cautious with sensitive components and their connectors. Static precautions are also important—use an anti
