Understanding the Steam Hardware Survey: The Underrepresentation of Radeon GPUs

Recent discussions surrounding the Steam Hardware Survey have brought to light intriguing concerns regarding the market share of Radeon discrete graphics cards. While some may dismiss these observations as mere conspiracy theories, it’s essential to delve into the data to understand the real reasons behind this phenomenon.

A significant factor contributing to the low market share displayed by Radeon GPUs is their misidentification within the survey. According to reports, when a system is equipped with an integrated GPU (iGPU) alongside a discrete GPU, such as the AMD Radeon 9070XT, Steam tends to categorize the graphics capabilities under a generic label – in this case, as “AMD Radeon™ Graphics.” This means that many users who might own powerful Radeon hardware are inaccurately represented in the survey results.

I have previously raised this issue on Steam forums, including discussions within the Steam beta channel. I believe it’s crucial for AMD to be cognizant of this potential misrepresentation. If developers and users rely on these survey results to make decisions, it could distort the perceived market landscape, ultimately impacting AMD’s visibility and share.

Upon reviewing specific data points—highlighted in red in the initial screenshots—it becomes clear that the results from the Steam Hardware Survey would look quite different if this misrepresentation were corrected. However, interestingly, survey results from Linux show a different pattern, which raises further questions about the accuracy and reliability of the data across different platforms.

To summarize, based on the Steam Hardware Survey, AMD appears to hold a mere 17% market share. However, this figure does not accurately reflect the true number of Radeon GPUs in operation due to the aforementioned issues. It’s essential for the community to spread awareness about this discrepancy in hopes that Valve will take corrective measures.

For now, one workaround for users experiencing this issue is to disable their integrated GPU. However, this leads to another concern regarding VRAM availability, further complicating solutions for those affected.

In an important update, I’ve also discovered that this issue isn’t limited to AMD graphics cards alone. It appears that NVIDIA cards are similarly affected when paired with integrated GPUs. Essentially, whenever a system has both an integrated and a discrete GPU, Steam may inadvertently mix their data, leading to skewed survey results.
