I upgraded to a 5090 and it didn’t make me any happier.

My Journey from 3090 Ti to 5090: A Reality Check in GPU Upgrades

As an avid PC gamer, I feel compelled to share my recent experience in the world of graphics cards, particularly as many of us are navigating the frustrating landscape of gaming hardware purchases. If you’ve been feeling disheartened about not snagging the graphics card of your dreams, this may resonate with you.

Several years ago, I indulged myself with the purchase of an EVGA 3090 Ti for around $1600. At the time, it felt like a monumental investment, but considering my gaming habits—averaging four hours per day and often exceeding ten on my days off—I justified the expense. In my mind, skipping the 4000 series and waiting for the 5000 series was a sensible strategy.

When the 5000 series was announced, I was initially thrilled. However, as excitement turned to disillusionment, I found myself grappling with disappointment over the anticipated upgrade that I had been longing for since my 3090 Ti purchase.

A few months later, an opportunity arose to purchase the Aorus Master Ice card at “retail price”—a staggering $3000—from a reputable retailer. Not wanting to pass up this chance, I made the leap and bought the card, convinced that it would elevate my gaming experience to new heights.

Now, a month into using the 5090, I find myself contemplating a return. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I envisioned smoothly playing the latest Doom at 1440p on ultra settings, achieving a steady 163 frames per second without a hitch. Similarly, I imagined tackling Expedition 33 at maximum settings with seamless performance.

Alas, reality did not meet my lofty aspirations. While the 5090 does offer improved performance over the 3090 Ti, the trade-offs have been significant. Concerns about cable melting, the card’s substantial 600-watt power draw, and the nagging performance hiccups—despite settings adjusted marginally higher—have detracted from my overall gaming experience.

This journey has been a bit disheartening, to say the least. To anyone else out there wrestling with similar upgrade dilemmas, I want to reassure you: if your situation mirrors mine, you aren’t missing out on as much as you might think. The astronomical prices attached to these cards create the illusion of groundbreaking improvements, but we are simply grappling
