Unexpected Google Drive Files: What to Do If You’re Concerned

This morning, as I was casually scrolling through my Google Drive on my phone, something unusual caught my eye. I discovered two files that had been shared with me without any prior notice. One was a folder, and the other was an Excel document. Out of sheer curiosity—and perhaps a touch of fatigue—I opened the Excel file. To my surprise, it contained random characters in Cyrillic, which only heightened my concerns.

Regrettably, without fully investigating the contents of the folder, I instinctively closed everything when I realized that this situation didn’t sit right with me. As someone who tends to be quite cautious about my online safety, this unexpected occurrence has left me feeling uneasy.

Now, my mind is racing with questions. Should I take any specific actions in response to this? I’ve already checked my email for notifications about these shared files, but found nothing in my inbox, just Google Drive informing me that they were shared recently.

I would love to hear your thoughts and advice. Is there a possibility that these files could pose a threat to my account? How should I proceed to ensure my online safety? I appreciate any insight or experiences you might have regarding similar situations.

Thank you for your support!

  1. Hi, thank you for sharing your concerns. Sharing unfamiliar files on Google Drive can sometimes be a sign of malicious activity or unintended sharing. Here are some steps you should consider to protect your account:

    • Do not open or interact further with the suspicious files: Since you’ve already opened the Excel file, just ensure it’s closed and avoid interacting with any unknown files.
    • Check shared file permissions: Navigate to your Google Drive, locate the shared files, right-click, and select “Share” to see who has access. If there are unfamiliar or suspicious accounts, remove their access.
    • Review recent activity: You can view your recent activity by clicking on the “My Activity” section or using Google Drive’s activity panel to check for any unexpected actions.
    • Secure your account: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security. Change your password if you notice any suspicious activity.
    • Run a security scan: Use a trusted antivirus or anti-malware software on your device to ensure no malicious software is present.
    • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect your account has been compromised, visit Google’s Security Checkup page and consider contacting Google Support for further assistance.
