The Reality of Cybersecurity: Is It Just a Checkbox?
In today’s digital age, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. Yet, there seems to be a growing sentiment among professionals that many organizations pay lip service to security measures without genuinely prioritizing them. As someone who has spent nearly a decade in the IT field, primarily in non-Fortune 500 companies, I can attest to this phenomenon.
Throughout my career, I have observed numerous instances where the true value of cybersecurity seemed undermined. I currently find myself in a position that reflects this troubling trend; despite holding a cybersecurity role, my contributions often feel more like a compliance requirement than a vital function for the organization. My direct report, an IT director without a strong cybersecurity background, ultimately decides the direction of security strategies.
What’s more perplexing is the dynamic of my workload. Although I am compensated well for my position and enjoy the flexibility of working from home, the lack of engagement in cybersecurity initiatives leaves something to be desired. Despite my attempts to enhance our company’s security posture—suggesting proactive measures and offering to take on additional responsibilities—I’ve found little traction.
It’s a strange juxtaposition: a stable job with limited demands and a salary that overshadows my contributions. While it may seem prudent to relish in the comfort of my situation, I can’t shake the feeling that we have a responsibility to prioritize genuine cybersecurity efforts.
