I’ve been put in charge of security and I have no idea what I’m doing.

Navigating My New Role in Cybersecurity: A Beginner’s Journey

Starting a new job can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when you’re thrust into a responsibility that feels far beyond your experience. Recently, I found myself in just such a situation when I accepted a position that included a vague mention of “helping with computer stuff.” Little did I know that I would soon be tasked with managing the company’s cybersecurity efforts—a responsibility I did not anticipate and feel somewhat ill-equipped to handle.

Upon joining, it quickly became apparent that the organization had essentially no established cybersecurity protocols. Surprisingly, this task had been overlooked until now, leaving me to pioneer our company’s security initiatives. With no formal training, certifications, or significant experience in the cybersecurity landscape, I felt a wave of uncertainty wash over me.

Fortunately, our company isn’t under intense scrutiny at the moment, but we are aware that this will likely change as we aim to make our mark in the industry. To proactively address potential vulnerabilities, we’re planning to hire a security consultant, but I’m eager to ensure we don’t come across as completely unprepared when that time comes. It’s now my responsibility to lay the groundwork.

So, where do I even begin?

Embarking on this journey has been daunting, but I’ve found comfort in the knowledge that I am not alone in feeling out of my depth. However, thanks to the support and advice from the online community, I’m more optimistic about the path ahead. I appreciate everyone’s insights; they’ve given me reasons to believe I can navigate these challenges and develop our cybersecurity framework effectively.

As I continue to explore this new territory, I am excited to share what I learn and document my progress. Stay tuned for updates on this journey, as I strive to transform my initial anxiety into actionable steps for creating a robust cybersecurity strategy for our team!
