Discovered a public live feed of a child’s bedroom webcam and reported it to ISP Rogers.com, but they showed no concern—what are my options now?

A Concern for Child Safety: Reporting a Public Webcam Stream

In today’s digital world, privacy is increasingly at risk, especially for vulnerable populations like children. Recently, I encountered a disturbing situation that emphasized the importance of addressing such privacy violations promptly.

While exploring the IoT security landscape through a tool called Shodan.io, I inadvertently discovered a public webcam streaming live footage from a child’s bedroom. Alarmed by this breach, I pursued a resolution by reaching out to Rogers, the ISP associated with the webcam’s IP address. To my dismay, the initial response from their customer support team was less than reassuring.

After a lengthy and frustrating discussion with customer support, I was ultimately told that they could not directly assist me and suggested contacting authorities in my home country, Austria. This response made me feel that the matter was not being taken seriously and that my concerns were dismissed. Like any responsible person—and especially as a parent—it’s haunting to think that someone might unknowingly expose their child’s private space to the outside world.

How the Situation Evolved

As I reflected on this experience, I decided to escalate the issue further. I reached out via email to the Rogers abuse team, as well as the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. I’m also planning to retry contacting Canadian authorities using the provided phone number.

Fortunately, in an update, I received word from Rogers indicating that they had escalated the matter and would be contacting the webcam owner. A brief check of the stream confirmed that the video feed was soon password protected. It’s a relief to know that the urgent issue was addressed, but it raises larger questions about how many similar situations go unnoticed and unreported.

The Power of Community

I’m grateful for the outpouring of support and suggestions from those who engaged with my post. It shows the collective vigilance and concern for child safety that we should all share. Through collaborative efforts, we can bring awareness to vulnerabilities in public-facing technologies and advocate for proactive measures to protect private lives.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to report it. Reach out to the relevant authorities, take notes of your communications, and seek the support of your community. It may feel frustrating when immediate responses aren’t forthcoming, but persistence can lead to positive change.

As technology continues to evolve, so too must our commitment to safeguarding the privacy of those who deserve it most, especially our children. Let’s work together to ensure their safety online and protect

  1. Additionally, if you haven’t already done so, consider reporting the incident to local authorities or privacy watchdog organizations in your country. They can often initiate investigations into unauthorized webcam streams or privacy breaches. Document all your communications with the ISP and authorities for future reference.

To enhance overall security, ensure that any IoT devices you manage or monitor have strong, unique passwords and are updated regularly. If you discover a public stream from a device you own or manage, contact the device manufacturer or vendor for assistance in securing it.

Stay vigilant and proactive—discussing these issues with your community and support networks can also contribute to raising awareness and preventing similar incidents in the future.
