I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Unique Approach to Learning Cybersecurity Fundamentals

Hello, dear readers!

I am excited to share with you an innovative iOS application I have developed as part of my master’s thesis—SecureMind. Drawing inspiration from Duolingo’s engaging learning techniques, this app aims to educate the general public on the essential principles of cybersecurity. My research focuses on the effectiveness of mobile microlearning in motivating individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge.

Explore the Learning Experience

SecureMind is designed to provide a structured learning journey through various chapters and sections that cover key cybersecurity concepts. Before diving into each chapter, users are prompted to assess their existing knowledge and will have the opportunity to measure their progress through a test aimed at gauging improvement at the end. Each section delivers concise information followed by a quick quiz, ensuring that users thoroughly understand the material.

To foster long-term retention of learned concepts, a comprehensive library is made accessible after the completion of the first chapter. This library expands as users advance through the app, allowing them to revisit previously acquired knowledge. Additionally, I regularly publish concise cybersecurity news articles to keep users informed of the latest developments in the field.

Gamification for Enhanced Engagement

Recognizing that traditional learning methods like lengthy video courses can often feel tedious, I integrated gamification elements into the app to make learning more enjoyable. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for completing lessons, utilizing the library, and engaging with news articles. As users become more active, their IQ score increases; however, maintaining this score requires consistent engagement, as inactivity can result in a decrease.

Furthermore, users can collect coins as they progress, which can be spent on customizing their app icon, setting personalized titles for notifications, and more. This approach not only incentivizes continued learning but also adds a personal touch to the user experience.

Utilizing Quality Resources

Understanding the complexity of providing reliable security advice, I based the content of SecureMind on the Digital Führerschein (DiFü), a resource supported by the German government. This content was subsequently reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure accuracy and relevance.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and consider sharing it with friends and family—your support will significantly aid my research efforts!

You can download SecureMind from the App Store here: Download SecureMind.

Thank you for reading, and happy learning!
