For my master’s thesis, I created a cybersecurity education application modeled after Duolingo.

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, readers!

I’m excited to share with you a project I’ve been working on as part of my master’s thesis: a new iOS application called SecureMind. Designed to make learning about cybersecurity accessible and engaging for everyone, this app draws inspiration from Duolingo’s innovative approach to education.

Why SecureMind?

In our increasingly digital world, understanding cybersecurity is crucial. With that in mind, I aimed to explore how mobile microlearning can motivate individuals to expand their knowledge in this vital area. SecureMind allows users to voluntarily share their usage data, assisting me in evaluating the effectiveness of various features and understanding user interaction.

App Features: A Structured Learning Journey

SecureMind is structured into chapters and sections, each focusing on fundamental aspects of cybersecurity. To personalize the learning experience, the app assesses users’ prior knowledge before they dive into a new chapter, followed by a post-assessment to highlight their progress. Each content section is accompanied by a concise informational snippet, followed by a quiz designed to test comprehension.

To foster long-term retention of learned material, the app includes a continuously expanding library. Once users complete the first chapter, they unlock a repository of previously learned information, which grows with each additional chapter completed. Additionally, I aim to keep users informed by providing snippets of current cybersecurity news.

Making Learning Fun through Gamification

Recognizing that conventional video courses can be tedious, I incorporated two key gamification elements to enhance user engagement. The Security IQ system awards points for completing fundamental lessons, utilizing the library, and staying updated with the news section. Users are encouraged to remain active, as their IQ reflects their level of engagement—daily inactivity can lead to a decrease in their score.

Moreover, users can earn coins throughout their journey, which can be spent on customizing various aspects of the app, such as setting personalized titles for notifications and changing the app icon.

A Solid Foundation for Security Knowledge

Given the complexities surrounding cybersecurity advice, I based the content of SecureMind on the DiFĂĽ (Digital FĂĽhrerschein), an initiative supported by the German government. The information has been rigorously reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure its quality and relevance.

I invite you to explore SecureMind for yourself! Your feedback and support will not only enrich your understanding of cybersecurity but also contribute to my research.
