In recent discussions within the IT community, a recurring sentiment has surfaced: Is corporate cybersecurity truly a priority, or is it merely a façade? Many professionals have voiced their concerns, citing experiences that suggest a troubling disconnect between intention and action in cybersecurity practices across various companies.

Having spent a decade in the IT sector, working with several non-Fortune 500 organizations, I’ve encountered numerous instances that reveal a stark reality: for many businesses, cybersecurity often appears to be just a box to check on an insurance form rather than a genuine commitment to protecting data.

Take my current role, for instance. Despite my expertise in the field, I report to an IT director whose background lacks traditional cybersecurity experience. This raises questions about how much weight security considerations hold in decision-making processes. The workload I manage is surprisingly light, and while the compensation is generous and the flexibility of working from home allows me to juggle everyday tasks, it’s disheartening to find that my proactive efforts to enhance the company’s security posture receive little traction.
