For my master’s thesis, I created an engaging cybersecurity education tool modeled after the aesthetic and functionality of Duolingo.

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, everyone!

I am excited to announce the launch of my new iOS application, SecureMind. This innovative app aims to educate users about essential cybersecurity concepts in a way that’s engaging and interactive, drawing inspiration from the successful model of Duolingo. Developed as part of my master’s thesis, this project explores how mobile microlearning can motivate individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is designed for anyone interested in improving their understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals. The app is structured into easily digestible chapters and sections, allowing users to assess their existing knowledge before diving into new content. At the end of each chapter, users can evaluate their progress through a test, effectively tracking their learning journey.

The app breaks down complex cybersecurity topics into manageable snippets, followed by quizzes that reinforce comprehension. Moreover, a unique feature allows users to unlock a library of previously covered material after completing the first chapter, which expands as they continue to learn.

To keep users engaged, I have integrated several gamification elements into the app. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for their learning achievements, including completing quizzes and utilizing the library. This IQ is designed to reflect active participation, as inactivity will gradually decrease one’s score. In addition, users can earn coins to personalize their experience, such as customizing the app icon or setting unique titles for notifications.

Credible and Relevant Content

Creating reliable security guidance is crucial, which is why I based the app’s content on the DiFĂĽ program, which is supported by the German government. This material has also been reviewed by my thesis supervisor to ensure its accuracy and relevance.

Join the Cybersecurity Learning Journey

I warmly invite you to try out SecureMind and share it with your friends and family. Your support not only helps with my academic research but also contributes to spreading cybersecurity awareness among a wider audience.

  1. Thank you for sharing your exciting project, SecureMind!

Congratulations on developing such an innovative and engaging cybersecurity educational tool. As a technical support engineer, I would like to offer some suggestions to help ensure your app’s success and troubleshoot potential issues:

    • Content Accuracy & Updates: Since your content is based on the DiFĂĽ program supported by the German government, consider implementing a content management system (CMS) within the app to easily update or modify educational material as needed without requiring app updates.
    • Gamification Engagement: To increase user retention, analyze the Security IQ and coins system data to optimize reward thresholds and gamification elements. Incorporating push notifications for reminders can also motivate ongoing learning.
    • Library Unlocking Feature: Ensure that the library unlocking mechanism correctly tracks user progress and persists across sessions—using persistent storage options like Core Data or UserDefaults in iOS.
    • Performance Optimization: Given the app’s interactive nature, optimize for smooth performance to prevent lag during quizzes or content loading. Profiling and testing across different device models can help identify bottlenecks.
