The Illusion of Cybersecurity: Is It Just a Checkbox for Companies?

In today’s digital landscape, the issue of cybersecurity has come to the forefront. However, there seems to be a troubling trend where many organizations claim to prioritize cybersecurity but fall short when it comes to actual implementation. This leads to the question: Are companies genuinely invested in protecting their digital assets, or is cybersecurity simply a formality for them?

As someone who has spent approximately ten years in IT across various organizations outside of the Fortune 500, I have encountered numerous situations that illuminate a stark reality: many businesses view cybersecurity as a mere checkbox, designed to satisfy insurance requirements rather than as a critical component of their operations.

Currently, I find myself in a role where the implications of cybersecurity are evident yet underappreciated. My supervisor, an IT director lacking formal security training, has the final say on our cybersecurity initiatives, which raises a significant concern for me. Despite the fact that my workload is light and my compensation is considerably higher than what my responsibilities entail, I continue to seek opportunities to enhance our company’s security measures. I’ve even offered to take on additional tasks to bolster our security posture, but these efforts have largely gone unacknowledged.

It’s a perplexing situation. While it would be easy to settle into a comfortable routine, the lack of proactive security measures keeps me questioning the sincerity of our company’s commitment to cybersecurity.
