Recently, I encountered a serious privacy issue involving a public webcam stream broadcasting from a child’s bedroom. As a concerned individual, I felt compelled to take action and report this unsettling discovery.
The Discovery
While browsing the IoT security search engine Shodan, I stumbled upon a live webcam feed originating from a child’s room. Intrigued and alarmed, I quickly deduced that the owner of this webcam was a customer of Rogers Communications, a major ISP in Canada. Given the sensitive nature of this situation, I decided to reach out to their support team for assistance.
Initial Contact with the ISP
Upon contacting Rogers, I was redirected through several channels. My first interaction was with a customer support representative who seemed to understand the gravity of the situation. However, after an exhausting half-hour wait and explanation, I was simply referred to a supervisor. Unfortunately, this supervisor was also unable to provide the help I needed, advising me to contact local authorities instead.
Feeling disheartened by their lack of action, I decided to explore other avenues. I emailed Rogers’ abuse department and reached out to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, along with the Canadian Centre for cyber security, hoping to escalate the matter more effectively.
Updates and Progress
Since my initial outreach, I’ve received updates that lend some hope. The owner of the webcam has now secured the video feed with a password, indicating that they were likely unaware of its public nature. Additionally, Rogers has acknowledged my concerns and is now in contact with the webcam owner. This response possibility reassures me that action is being taken.
I have attempted to engage with the appropriate Canadian authorities but had difficulty reaching someone directly. I will follow up with them and continue to keep all concerned individuals updated as I learn more about the situation.
