r/Cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest: Join Us in Solidarity
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity community will temporarily close its doors to the public in protest of Reddit’s recent changes to its API policies. These modifications threaten the existence of third-party applications and have raised significant concerns within our community.
Following a thorough review of the feedback collected from various discussions and mod communications, it is clear that a substantial portion of our community stands united in opposition to these changes. Members have voiced their desire for Reddit to reconsider or amend its stance on restricting API access and eliminating third-party apps.
In light of this, we have decided to observe a 48-hour blackout starting June 12th. During this period, r/cybersecurity will only be accessible to existing members, and new users or those without accounts will be unable to participate. This action aims to draw attention to our cause and demonstrate the collective passion of our community.
We encourage all of you to refrain from visiting Reddit during the blackout to amplify the impact of our protest. Additionally, we welcome your ideas on how to manage this period effectively. Suggestions could range from limiting new posts and comments to introducing discussions about alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky. This is an opportunity for all members to contribute, and we want to hear your thoughts.
As this situation unfolds, we remain vigilant. Reddit could choose to retract these changes, or they might implement more stringent measures that could further erode trust, including removing moderator roles or enforcing public access to our subreddit. Regardless of the outcome, we are honored to serve this community and will continue to advocate for your voices.
