Version 18: I’ve been assigned the security responsibilities, but I’m completely out of my depth.

Navigating the Uncharted Waters of Cybersecurity: A Newcomer’s Journey

Stepping into a new role often comes with a mix of excitement and anxiety, especially when unexpected responsibilities arise. I recently embarked on a fresh career opportunity, and while my job description hinted at responsibilities involving computer technology, I was taken aback when I discovered that I had been entrusted with managing the company’s cybersecurity.

To say that I have no background in this field would be an understatement. Despite having a solid foundation in Tech Support, my expertise does not extend to cybersecurity measures. My employer had not previously assigned anyone to oversee these critical protocols, meaning I am essentially starting from scratch. Although I’m eager to take on this challenge and ensure our systems remain secure, I find myself grappling with the vastness of this new territory.

Our company is fortunate to not currently face extensive scrutiny, but we anticipate increased visibility in the near future. To prepare for this shift, we’re planning to bring in a professional security consultant. However, I want to ensure we can approach this expert without feeling overwhelmed or unprepared for their arrival.

This leads me to a pivotal question: where should I begin my journey into cybersecurity?

To my fellow professionals who have navigated similar situations, I would love to hear your advice. What essential steps should I take first? How can I build a foundational understanding of cybersecurity that will help me maintain our company’s integrity until expert guidance arrives?

Thank you to everyone who has offered insights; your support boosts my confidence in tackling this unexpected challenge. Here’s to learning and growing in the exciting realm of cybersecurity!
