Stumbled upon public webcam stream of kid’s bedroom. Contacted ISP (ROGERS.com) – They couldn’t care less. What to do?

Urgent Matter: Public Webcam Revealing Child’s Bedroom – Seeking Solutions

In a troubling turn of events, a startling discovery has surfaced regarding the safety and privacy of a child’s bedroom. While browsing security vulnerabilities via Shodan, an IoT search engine, I inadvertently came across a live public webcam stream originating from a young child’s room. The IP address suggested the owner resides in Canada and is a customer of Rogers Communications. Concerned for the child’s safety, I promptly reached out to Rogers for assistance, only to be met with a frustrating lack of urgency.

Initial Attempts to Seek Help

When contacting Rogers customer service, I explained the situation to a representative, clarifying that I was not a Rogers customer but a concerned individual based in Austria. After a lengthy wait, I was transferred to a supervisor who informed me that I needed to report this issue to local authorities—presumably in Austria—rather than taking action themselves. This left me feeling disheartened and confused about how to effectively address the situation.

With no immediate resolution in sight, I took to further communication avenues. I reached out to Rogers’ abuse team via email, and I also contacted the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as well as the Canadian Centre for cyber security, hoping that one of these organizations would be able to intervene.

Positive Developments and Next Steps

As of January 26, I received an update that the owner of the webcam has been contacted, and the stream is now password protected. This is an encouraging step towards safeguarding the child’s privacy. Moreover, I received a response from Rogers indicating that my concerns have been escalated, and they will follow up with the webcam owner.

I appreciate the overwhelming support from the online community. Many individuals have reached out with offers to help, which has been incredibly heartwarming and encouraging in this rather disconcerting situation.

Community Support and Ongoing Communication

In addition to contacting Rogers, I have also attempted to reach Canadian authorities through their provided contact number. Regrettably, I was unable to get through, but I plan to follow up. While the situation does not constitute a direct emergency, I will keep revisiting these avenues until I make sufficient progress.

As I navigate this complex issue, I will continue to provide updates on any further developments. In the meantime, if anyone else has faced similar situations or has insights on how to handle issues of online privacy, your suggestions would be immensely valuable. Together, we can work toward creating a safer and
