Reddit’s API Changes Lead to Community Blackout: r/cybersecurity Takes a Stand
From June 12th to 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily close its doors as part of a collective protest against significant changes to Reddit’s API and the subsequent shutdown of third-party applications.
In recent discussions, we have gathered overwhelming feedback from our community, indicating a strong desire for Reddit to reconsider and revise its recent API modifications that severely impact third-party app developers.
As a response to these concerns, r/cybersecurity will enact a 48-hour blackout starting June 12th, unless Reddit takes action to revert these changes. During this time, access to the subreddit will be restricted for both new members and unauthenticated users. Furthermore, we encourage all users to refrain from visiting Reddit during this protest period.
We invite the community to share thoughts on potential activities during the blackout. Options include limiting new posts and comments, introducing alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or creating discussion threads to facilitate conversation. Your input is invaluable in determining our next steps.
While we hope that Reddit may reconsider its stance, the possibility remains that they could take more drastic actions, such as removing moderation teams or forcing the subreddit to remain public. Regardless of the outcome, it’s been our privilege to serve this community.
