Upcoming Blackout: r/Cybersecurity Stands Together Against Reddit’s API Changes

Dear readers,

We wish to inform you that from June 12th to June 14th, the r/Cybersecurity community will be taking a stand by temporarily going private. This decision arises from substantial feedback we’ve gathered, reflecting a shared concern regarding Reddit’s recent alterations to its API policies, which threaten the existence of third-party applications.

The overwhelming sentiment among our members is clear: there is a strong desire for Reddit to reconsider or modify its recent stance on restricting API access and eliminating third-party app support. Consequently, unless there is a reversal of these changes, our subreddit will join the 48-hour blackout as a form of protest.

During this blackout, new users and those who have not authenticated will be unable to access the community. We strongly encourage everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit during this time. Additionally, we invite you to share your thoughts on how we can best mobilize during our protest. Suggestions might include limiting new posts and comments or connecting with alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky.

It is uncertain whether Reddit will respond to our concerns or take more extreme measures that could further diminish trust within the platform, such as removing moderators or keeping our subreddit public against our wishes. Regardless of the outcome, it has been an honor to serve as your moderators.

For more background on this situation, we recommend the following resources:

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can advocate for a more equitable platform for all users.

Stay tuned for updates, and remember, your voice matters!

Warm regards,
The r/Cybersecurity Moderation Team
