I’m excited to share with you my latest endeavor: SecureMind, an innovative iOS application designed to empower the general public with essential cybersecurity knowledge. Drawing inspiration from Duolingo’s engaging educational model, this app serves as a key component of my master’s thesis. My research focuses on the impact of mobile microlearning and its ability to inspire users to explore the vital world of cybersecurity.

Features of SecureMind

The app organizes critical cybersecurity topics into comprehensive chapters and sections. Each chapter begins with an assessment of the user’s existing knowledge, followed by a post-chapter test that highlights user improvements. This not only enhances learning retention but also provides an engaging way to track progress.

Each section consists of bite-sized information paired with quizzes, ensuring understanding and mastery of the material. To foster long-term retention, SecureMind introduces a dynamic library that unlocks as users complete chapters. This library allows users to revisit previously learned information, reinforcing their understanding of cybersecurity principles.

Gamification Elements to Enhance Engagement

Understanding that traditional educational methods can sometimes feel tedious, SecureMind incorporates two primary gamification features to elevate the learning experience. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for engaging with the content, utilizing the library, and staying updated with the latest cybersecurity news. This element not only incentivizes learning but also encourages daily interaction; however, it’s worth noting that inactivity can lead to a decline in IQ, keeping users motivated to stay engaged.

Additionally, users can collect coins through their activities, enabling them to personalize their app experience. Whether it’s customizing the app icon or setting unique titles for notifications, SecureMind allows users to make the app truly their own.

A Foundation Built on Credibility

In creating SecureMind, I acknowledged the complexities of providing accurate cybersecurity advice. Therefore, I collaborated with the DiFü initiative—an accredited program backed by the German government—to guide the app’s content. My thesis supervisor also reviewed the material to ensure it meets high educational standards.
