Cautionary Tale: A Close Call with a Discord Scam

Recently, I had an unsettling encounter on Discord that served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in online interactions. A user unexpectedly slid into my DMs, requesting that I test out their game. Having had no prior conversation with this individual, I found it odd but was intrigued enough to oblige. The user sent me a link to their game hosted on itch.io and encouraged me to download it.

Out of curiosity, I followed through and installed the game. Upon launching it, however, I was greeted with a prompt asking for a “beta tester” key. When I reached out to the user for this key, they responded with a series of screenshots that left me unsettled. They claimed to possess my personal information and threatened to leak it on platforms like Doxbin and other Discord servers. To make matters worse, they ominously announced that I had contracted a virus on my computer.

Feeling a rush of panic, I immediately ran antivirus scans using both Windows Defender and Avast. To my relief, both scans reported that my system was free of malware. I also took the precaution of changing my passwords for all vital accounts. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. Was this just a hollow threat, or should I genuinely be concerned?

To add to my uncertainty, it had only been about 40 minutes since this incident occurred, and I had yet to experience any unusual activities—no alarming pop-ups or access issues with my accounts. Still, I found myself pondering the next steps I should take.
