Are My Privacy and Security at Risk? A Peculiar Discovery Leads to Concerns About My Father’s Actions

In today’s digital age, concerns about privacy and security are more prevalent than ever, and sometimes these issues can touch our personal lives in unexpected ways. A recent experience of mine has prompted serious concerns regarding my own privacy—specifically, I suspect that my father may be tampering with my phone when I’m visiting my parents.

To provide you with some context, I reside about 40 minutes away from my parents, and I had a somewhat disconcerting encounter during a recent visit. My mother has expressed feelings that my father has been overly involved in her affairs. During my visit, she discovered a peculiar USB device—a strange gadget with a button and a switch on its side. Out of curiosity, I plugged it into my laptop, only to hear recordings of my mother’s conversations, as well as personal discussions I had with her and my sister that very day, including a call I had with my boyfriend earlier in the afternoon.

I must clarify that I have never granted my father access to my phone, nor has my mother. I own a Galaxy Note 9, while she has a newer iPhone model. Given that I’m not very tech-savvy, I find myself bewildered by the situation and uncertain about how such breaches of privacy could be taking place. More importantly, I’m anxious to understand if my father is capable of accessing my phone’s data even when I’m at my own home.

While it’s a delicate matter I would prefer to avoid discussing with him, I feel compelled to seek advice on how I can protect myself in light of this troubling discovery. If there is a chance that my phone is compromised, what steps can I take to safeguard my privacy?
