Two years after losing my previous iPhone, I received a Find My alert indicating it’s resting somewhere in Africa.

The Journey of an iPhone: From Lost to “Found” in Africa

Two years ago, I lost my old iPhone, a device that held not only memories but also a sense of connection to my past. Recently, I received an unexpected notification from the Find My app—my phone was alive and well, residing in a rural area in Africa.

Upon hearing this news, I quickly took action and initiated a remote wipe using the app. But I can’t help but wonder: Is it truly gone forever?

A Bit of Background

To fully appreciate my situation, let me share the story behind the loss. It was March 20, 2020, when I made the difficult decision to return to my home country with my parents due to the pandemic. My university advised students to head home, and amidst the chaos, I packed up most of my belongings into my minivan.

Fast forward to September 2021; I returned to university after nearly 18 months away. Eager to retrieve two of my old iPhones—my cherished iPhone 4 and iPhone 6s which carried significant sentimental value—I rushed to my minivan only to discover they were missing. In my haste to leave, I had forgotten to take them, leaving them behind in my apartment, which had since been occupied by three different tenants.

In January 2022, hope sparked when I received a notification indicating that my iPhone 4 had been located! However, my excitement quickly turned to disbelief when I learned it was over 7,000 kilometers away. I wasted no time and immediately performed a remote wipe, but it left me with lingering questions about the level of security that truly provides.

Meanwhile, my iPhone 6s remains lost, with no trace of its whereabouts to this day.

Conclusion

This experience has raised many thoughts regarding digital security and the complexities of our attachment to technology. While I’m relieved to have acted quickly on my iPhone 4, a sliver of curiosity remains about what happens to our devices when they venture into the world— and what truly happens when we say they’ve been wiped.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with my story and shared their thoughts! Your comments and insights have been invaluable as I navigate this unexpected detour in my tech journey.
