Troubleshooting a Stubborn Computer: A PhD Student’s Journey

As a dedicated PhD student, I faced an alarming issue recently: my trusted Windows computer, which has been an essential tool in my lab for the past 5-10 years, suddenly shut down without warning—leaving me anxious about my ongoing experiments. With no signs of a power failure and critical Software dependencies, this unexpected shutdown felt like a significant setback.

The Dilemma: A Computer That Refused to Power Up

After an evening of productive work, I came back to find my computer unresponsive. Attempts to revive it included swapping power cables, trying various outlets, power cycling the unit, and even a lengthy reset via the button. An orange LED briefly flickered when attempting to turn it on, leading me to speculate that it might be indicative of a deeper problem.
