Restored my 12-year-old laptop and set up Ubuntu—now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device for learning to type and write.

Reviving a Vintage Laptop: A Gift of Learning for My Child

In an exciting endeavor, I’ve successfully refurbished my 12-year-old laptop, breathing new life into it by installing Ubuntu. This laptop is set to become my 4-year-old daughter’s first personal device, a tool that will help her embark on her journey of learning, typing, and writing.

As I prepare this old machine for her, I’m keen on making the user experience as straightforward as possible. I’m exploring ways to configure the laptop to open directly into a text editor upon startup. This setup would eliminate the need for her to master mouse navigation at this early stage, allowing her to dive straight into writing without any distractions.

Additionally, I have a playful idea in mind: is it possible to boot the device with the Caps Lock key enabled? This would help her see her letters in uppercase right from the start, making it easier for her to focus on learning the alphabet and typing.

I’m excited about this project and the learning opportunities it opens up for my daughter. It’s amazing to think that a device many would consider outdated can still have a significant role in fostering creativity and knowledge in the next generation. Stay tuned for updates on our journey as she navigates her first steps in the digital world!
