r/cybersecurity Communities Will Shift to Private Status from June 12-14 in Response to Reddit’s API Policy Changes and the End of Third-Party Applications (Variation 16)

r/Cybersecurity to Go Private: A Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes

In response to overwhelming community feedback, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will take a strong stance against recent changes to Reddit’s API and the decision to discontinue third-party applications. From June 12th to June 14th, the subreddit will transition to a private status as part of a broader protest against these controversial changes.

The decision to activate a temporary blackout comes after a thorough review of community input, indicating a significant desire among members for Reddit to reconsider its position on third-party apps and API restrictions. The moderators are committed to representing the community’s voice, and if Reddit does not adjust its approach, further action may be taken depending on the feedback from r/cybersecurity members.

During the blackout, individuals who are new to the subreddit or those who are not logged in will be unable to access the community. In light of this action, we strongly recommend that members refrain from visiting Reddit entirely during the blackout period. We encourage all members to share their thoughts on potential activities for the community during this time—whether that involves limiting new posts, offering introductions to alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or initiating a general discussion thread.

As we move forward, Reddit’s response remains uncertain. They may choose to reverse their recent decisions, or they might take more drastic steps that could further erode trust within the community, such as removing moderators or mandating that the subreddit remains public. Regardless of the outcome, it’s been a privilege to serve this community.
