Variation 15: “My Master’s Thesis: Creating a Cybersecurity Education App Inspired by Duolingo”

Introducing SecureMind: A Duolingo-Inspired Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, everyone!

I am excited to share with you my latest project, an iOS application called SecureMind, designed to educate users about the essential principles of cybersecurity. This innovative app, which draws inspiration from the engaging learning methods employed by Duolingo, is a crucial component of my master’s thesis focusing on the role of mobile microlearning in enhancing cybersecurity awareness among the general public.

About SecureMind

The SecureMind app is structured around fundamental cybersecurity concepts that are carefully organized into various chapters and sections. At the beginning of each chapter, users are prompted to assess their existing knowledge. Upon completing the entire chapter, they can gauge their progress through a follow-up assessment, allowing them to visualize their learning journey.

Each section delivers bite-sized information, followed by quizzes that test comprehension and reinforce learning. This design aims to promote an interactive learning experience rather than the traditional, tedious video courses.

Features Designed for Retention and Engagement

To support long-term retention, we introduce a comprehensive library that houses previously encountered content, which becomes accessible after the completion of the first chapter and expands with each additional chapter mastered. Furthermore, I share brief updates on noteworthy cybersecurity news, keeping users informed about the evolving landscape of online safety.

To enhance user engagement, SecureMind incorporates gamification elements that transform the learning experience. The integrated Security IQ system rewards users with points for studying the fundamentals, utilizing the resource library, and staying updated with the news. Active participation not only boosts one’s IQ but also presents a challenge; inactivity can lead to a decrease in IQ, motivating continued engagement. Additionally, users earn coins that can be used for personalizing their app experience, such as customizing app icons or setting unique notifications.

A Strong Foundation of Trustworthy Content

Understanding the complexities of providing effective security advice, I based the content of the app on the Digital Führerschein (DiFü), which is supported by the German government. This material has also been reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure credibility and reliability.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and consider sharing it with others. Your support will significantly contribute to my research efforts in this vital field.
