Urgent Alert: Delete the “Barcode Scanner” App Now!
In recent news, a troubling development has come to light regarding the mobile app “Barcode Scanner,” developed by Lavabird and available on the Google Play Store. If you currently have this application installed on your smartphone, it’s crucial to remove it immediately—here’s why.
A respected cybersecurity firm, MalwareBytes, has discovered that the “Barcode Scanner” app has recently evolved into a harmful piece of malware. Originally created to assist users in scanning QR codes and barcodes through their phone cameras, the app underwent an update that dramatically changed its behavior. Users are now bombarded with intrusive advertisements and unwanted links that could direct them to potentially harmful websites—without their knowledge or consent.
MalwareBytes researchers identified the presence of malicious code that had not been detected in previous iterations of the app. Alarmingly, this new code is specifically designed to evade detection by Google Play Protect, placing users at significant risk.
Despite these findings, Google has yet to issue a warning or remove the app from their store, leaving many users unaware of the dangers it poses. If you’ve installed the “Barcode Scanner” app and notice any unusual activity on your device, it’s imperative to act swiftly. To uninstall, navigate to your Android’s App Settings, locate the app related to the following package name: com.qrcodescanner.barcodescanner, and remove it promptly.
