Discovered a public webcam feed showing a child’s bedroom. Reported it to ISP Rogers.com, but received no response. What steps should I take next?

Urgent Issue: Public Webcam Exposing Child’s Bedroom

Recently, during a routine exploration of the Internet of Things (IoT) security landscape via Shodan.io, I came across a troubling discovery: a public webcam stream broadcasting from the bedroom of a child. Alarmed by the implications of such a violation of privacy, I traced the source to an apparent customer of Rogers, one of Canada’s ISPs. In light of this alarming revelation, I promptly reached out to Rogers’ customer support to address the issue.

Initial Contact with Customer Support

When I contacted Rogers, I detailed my concerns about the exposed webcam stream, emphasizing that it likely posed a risk to the child involved, as the owners may not even be aware of the situation. Unfortunately, my experience with first-level support fell short of expectations. After being transferred to a supervisor, I found that my options were limited. They directed me back to local authorities in Austria or suggested I contact Canadian law enforcement, which seemed impractical given the urgency of the situation.

Subsequent Actions Taken

Frustrated but determined, I pursued additional avenues for resolution. I reached out to the Canadian Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as well as the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, in hopes they could provide immediate assistance. Additionally, I tried to contact the Canadian authorities via the phone number provided by Rogers, but I was unable to get through. It appears that reaching the right people would require navigating complex channels, which is daunting when immediate action feels required.

Update: Progress Made

On January 26th, I received some positive news regarding the webcam feed. The owner was contacted, and the video stream is now password protected. Moreover, I also received an email from Rogers informing me that my concerns have been escalated and that they will reach out to the webcam owner. This development is a step in the right direction, alleviating some of the unease experienced since my initial discovery.

Community Support

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who offered support and advice throughout this process. It has been heartening to see a community come together to address such pressing issues of privacy and safety.

Staying Vigilant

For anyone who might face a similar situation, I urge you to take action similar to mine. Do not hesitate to contact authorities if you discover a public stream that could jeopardize someone’s privacy, especially that of a child. I’ve made several contacts, including Rogers support and privacy organizations, and I encourage anyone
