A Concerning Discover: Encountering an Open Webcam Stream and Seeking Solutions
In today’s digital landscape, where privacy concerns are paramount, finding an unprotected webcam stream can be both alarming and perplexing. Recently, I encountered a public webcam broadcasting from a child’s bedroom while exploring the internet. This discovery led me down a path of trying to protect a child’s privacy, and here’s the journey I’ve embarked on—along with updates and lessons learned.
The Initial Encounter
While exploring Shodan, an IoT search engine, I stumbled upon a live feed from a webcam located in a child’s room. An immediate sense of concern washed over me. As a parent myself, I couldn’t fathom that the webcam owner, a customer of Rogers Communications in Canada, could be unaware of the exposure their child’s privacy was facing.
With a sense of urgency, I decided to reach out to Rogers support to see if they could intervene. Unfortunately, my experience with their customer service left much to be desired. After an extensive conversation that felt like a loop of information, I was left feeling frustrated and largely unheard. Their first-level support advised me to contact either the authorities in Austria or Canadian law enforcement, which I felt was an inadequate response to such a critical situation.
Seeking Assistance
In light of the unsatisfactory response from the ISP, I took matters into my own hands. I’ve reached out to various organizations, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. I also attempted to contact Canadian authorities through Rogers’ recommended number, unfortunately without any success. Nevertheless, I am determined to pursue this matter further until I ensure the child’s privacy is safeguarded.

– January 26: In a positive turn of events, I learned that the owner of the webcam was contacted, and the video feed is now password-protected! This was a hopeful resolution to a worrisome situation.
- I also received an email from Rogers indicating that my concerns had been escalated. They have pledged to get in touch with the webcam owner, which is encouraging news and a testament to the power of raising awareness.
