The Illusion of Cybersecurity: A Personal Reflection

In the contemporary business landscape, the significance of cybersecurity is often touted, yet the reality within many organizations tells a different story. Having spent nearly a decade immersed in IT roles across various companies—none of which are Fortune 500—I have encountered an unsettling trend: while companies assert their commitment to cybersecurity, their actions often suggest otherwise.

Throughout my career, I’ve observed numerous instances that reveal a lack of genuine concern for security protocols. Currently, I find myself in a role that, frankly, feels more like a formality than a real position dedicated to safeguarding the company’s assets. Although my title may imply a level of responsibility, the reality is that I report to an IT director with no formal background in cybersecurity. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of leadership in prioritizing our security landscape.

Interestingly, my workload is relatively light, and I find myself compensated handsomely for my efforts. Best of all, I have the flexibility of working from home, allowing me to manage personal tasks alongside my professional duties. However, despite the comfort that comes with my position, I feel a lingering dissatisfaction. I am eager to improve our organization’s security posture and have proposed increasing my responsibilities in this area, yet my suggestions have not gained any traction.

It`s an odd predicament—one where I could simply relish the ease of my current situation, but a part of me feels compelled to seek meaningful improvements. I find myself wondering if others share this sentiment.
