Created a cybersecurity education app modeled after Duolingo for my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share my latest project with you all—an innovative iOS application called SecureMind, designed to teach the essentials of cybersecurity to a broad audience. This app is the culmination of my master’s thesis, where I explored the effectiveness of mobile microlearning in motivating individuals to acquire crucial cybersecurity knowledge. Inspired by Duolingo’s engaging method of teaching languages, SecureMind aims to make learning about cybersecurity both enjoyable and effective.

What Does SecureMind Offer?

SecureMind is structured around key cybersecurity concepts, meticulously divided into chapters and sections. To optimize the learning experience, the app begins by assessing users’ prior knowledge and concludes with a test at the end of each chapter, allowing users to track their progress and measure their learning outcomes.

Each section presents bite-sized lessons followed by quizzes designed to reinforce comprehension. Furthermore, to aid long-term retention, users gain access to a dynamic library filled with previously covered material after completing the first chapter. This library expands as users progress, continually providing opportunities for review and self-assessment. The app also features short articles on the latest cybersecurity news, keeping users informed about current events in the field.

Engaging Learning Through Gamification

To keep learners motivated and engaged, SecureMind incorporates two significant gamification features.

  1. Security IQ System: Users earn points for their engagement—whether it’s through learning new concepts, utilizing the library, or reading the latest news. While active participation increases their IQ score, inactivity leads to a gradual decline. This dynamic fosters a continuous learning habit, making education feel both rewarding and challenging.

  2. Customization via Coins: Users can also earn coins for their activities, which can be spent on personalizing aspects of the app, such as changing the app icon or customizing titles in notifications, providing a personal touch to the learning experience.

Grounded in Research

Recognizing the complexity of offering solid security advice, I based the app’s content on the DiFĂĽ program, which is supported by the German government. This foundational content was subsequently refined and approved by my academic supervisor, ensuring that users receive accurate and relevant information.

Try SecureMind Today!

I invite you to explore SecureMind and see how it can enhance your understanding of cybersecurity. Your feedback is invaluable to my research, and sharing the app with friends or colleagues would be greatly appreciated.
