Three Years of Cybersecurity Experience, a Master’s Degree, and Notable Employers—Feeling Completely Burned Out

Navigating Burnout in the Cybersecurity Field: A Personal Reflection

After three years immersed in the world of cybersecurity, I find myself standing at a crossroads. With a Master’s degree and experience at renowned companies decorating my resume, one might assume that I’m living the dream. However, the reality paints a different picture—one of fatigue and disillusionment.

Despite my passion for cybersecurity, I’m exhausted. The constant drive to enhance my skills and meet ever-increasing expectations has become exhausting. Each workday feels like a sprint, where tasks that should ideally take two to three days are compressed into merely eight hours. This unsustainable pace is wearing me down.

It’s not a lack of interest in my field; rather, it’s the overwhelming cycle that leaves little room for personal fulfillment. My daily routine, which often extends beyond the typical nine-to-five, drains my energy to the point where evenings are spent in a fog, unable to engage in either personal projects or even basic chores. The days blend together, punctuated by brief vacations that offer little more than a temporary escape before I return to the grind.

I find myself questioning whether this is simply the nature of work in the tech and cybersecurity industries, or if perhaps I’ve landed in a role that doesn’t align with my aspirations. The feeling of exhaustion has led me to reconsider my goals and motivations.

Am I alone in feeling this way? Is burnout a common experience in our field, or is there a solution I have yet to discover? I invite others in the cybersecurity community to share their thoughts and experiences. Let’s engage in a conversation about the challenges we face and how we might navigate them together.
