Reflecting on the Learning Curve of a Tech Career

In the world of technology, we often hear about the successes and innovations that define our industry. However, it’s the missteps and blunders that can leave a lasting impression—especially those that make your stomach drop. It’s vital to learn from these experiences and share them with others so they can avoid similar pitfalls.

I was recently reminded of this when I came across a discussion on Azure Multi-Factor Authentication, which inspired me to think back on my own journey in the tech field.

Early in my career, I worked as an implementation consultant, and I was still getting my bearings with SQL. Eager to fulfill a client request, I found myself in the process of crafting a deletion statement to remove specific records from a database. Our integrated system allowed for code testing by selecting only the highlighted portion of the script, which, at the time, gave me a false sense of security.

In my haste, I mistakenly executed the command without properly specifying the conditions for deletion. In an instant, millions of records were wiped from the production database, and it was during a particularly busy season. The panic that ensued was palpable. Fortunately, we had just implemented Oracle 11g, which included a lifesaving flashback functionality. This feature enabled us to recover the lost data without the need for an extensive restore.

That incident taught me valuable lessons about diligence, the importance of testing in a safe environment, and the consequences of a rushed decision. It also reinforced the notion that in our fast-paced tech careers, even small oversights can have significant repercussions.
