The Reality of Cybersecurity in the Workplace: A Personal Perspective
Cybersecurity has become a buzzword for many organizations, but how often does this translate into genuine concern and action? Having spent nearly ten years in the IT sector across several companies outside of the Fortune 500, I’ve observed a troubling trend: the prioritization of security often feels more performative than substantive.
In my current role, I find myself in a position that seems to serve as little more than a checkbox for compliance, primarily for insurance purposes. My supervisor, an IT director lacking a robust background in traditional security, has the final say, but there’s a noticeable gap in understanding the critical nuances of cybersecurity.
Despite the apparent lack of urgency regarding security measures, my workload is manageable, and I am compensated more than adequately for my responsibilities. I have the flexibility to work from home, which allows me to balance my professional and personal tasks seamlessly. However, I often feel a sense of disconnection when it comes to my efforts to enhance our company’s security protocols. I’ve proactively suggested ways to improve our security posture, even offering to take on additional responsibilities to better protect our organization, yet my proposals have gone largely unacknowledged.
This situation has left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I recognize the advantages of my circumstances; on the other, a sense of dissatisfaction lingers due to the apparent lack of emphasis on meaningful cybersecurity practices.
