Urgent Warning: If You Have the “Barcode Scanner” App, It’s Time to Uninstall

In recent weeks, a concerning issue has emerged surrounding a popular application known as “Barcode Scanner” by Lavabird, available on the Google Play Store. If you have this app on your smartphone, we urge you to take immediate action and uninstall it.

While many users may be unaware of the app’s troubling developments, recent findings from the reputable cybersecurity firm, MalwareBytes, highlight serious concerns. This once-harmless tool, designed for scanning QR codes and barcodes, has allegedly transformed into a vehicle for malware following its latest update.

According to reports from MalwareBytes, the recent update introduced a slew of advertisements and links to questionable websites without user consent. The researchers have uncovered malicious code embedded within the app—code that appears to be cleverly designed to evade detection by Google Play Protect.

Despite these alarming discoveries, Google has yet to issue a warning regarding the app. As a result, many users might still be using this potentially harmful application unaware of the risks it poses.

If you suspect that you have downloaded the “Barcode Scanner” app and have experienced unusual behavior on your device, it is critical to take action. To uninstall the app, navigate to your Android device’s App Settings, locate the package associated with the app (look for “com.qrcodescanner.barcodescanner”), and remove it immediately.
