The Unexpected Journey of My Lost iPhone: A Tale of Technology and Nostalgia

Two years ago, I experienced the disheartening loss of my beloved iPhone when circumstances forced me to relocate swiftly. Recently, I received a rather unexpected notification from Apple’s Find My app, indicating that my device had been located — and it was chilling in Africa.

In response to the alert, I promptly initiated a remote wipe of the device. But here’s the lingering question: was it truly erased?

A Journey Back Home

To provide some context, my story begins on March 20, 2020. As the pandemic escalated, my parents and I made the decision to return to our home country. The university urged students to leave, and amidst the chaos, I packed up nearly all my belongings into my minivan.

Fast forward to September 2021; I was back at the university, eager to reclaim pieces of my past. After nearly 18 months away, I headed to my minivan, looking forward to reuniting with two cherished iPhones: my iPhone 4, encased in leather, and my iPhone 6s. Much to my dismay, I discovered that they were nowhere to be found. It hit me then that I had inadvertently left them behind in my apartment when I moved out in March 2020. Since my departure, the place had seen three different tenants, and it seemed my sentimental gadgets were lost to time.

A Glimmer of Hope

Then came January 2022, when I received a notification that my iPhone 4 had been located! Excited, I quickly learned that it was over 7,000 kilometers away in a remote area of Africa. Without hesitation, I executed a remote wipe to protect my data, but the lingering question of whether the device was genuinely erased remains.

My iPhone 6s, however, is still unaccounted for, lost somewhere in the world, carrying memories and data that may never resurface.
