Reviving an Old Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Child’s First Computer
In a world where technology evolves at lightning speed, it’s often easy to forget the hidden potential of older devices. Recently, I took on the challenge of refurbishing my 12-year-old laptop and decided to give it a new lease on life by installing Ubuntu. This laptop is set to become my four-year-old daughter’s inaugural computer, where she can embark on her journey to learn typing and writing.
One of the primary goals I have is to create a user-friendly experience tailored specifically for her. To help facilitate her exploration in the digital realm, I’m looking for the simplest way to configure the laptop so that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. This would eliminate the need for her to navigate with a mouse at this early stage, allowing her to focus solely on her typing skills.
Additionally, I have another question on my mind: Is it possible to set the device to start with the Caps Lock enabled? This feature could potentially make it easier for her to recognize uppercase letters while she learns to type.
As I set up this laptop, I’m eager to provide a nurturing and intuitive environment for my daughter’s first steps into the world of technology.
