Today, I want to share a concerning experience that highlights the importance of online security and what steps to take when you suspect your account may have been compromised.

Recently, I found myself in a troubling situation when I received an email that simply contained a password I frequently use—one that I also employ for my current PC login. To make matters worse, the email was from a Spanish sender, which raised suspicions following an incident where an unknown account began following me on Spotify.

Last week, I noticed irregular activity on my Spotify account; my music would stop unexpectedly, and it became evident that someone was accessing my account. To regain control, I immediately logged out of all devices associated with my Spotify profile.

Then, things escalated when I received an email in Spanish from Spotify that stated:

“We have received a request to download data. To authorize the request, we need to verify this email address. If you want to continue with the application, click CONFIRM. If you did not initiate this request for a copy of your data, please follow the steps to protect your account.”

Anxious about the situation, I clicked on the provided link to secure my account, which led me to the official Spotify website. Without wasting any time, I changed my Spotify password and then proceeded to update passwords for my Google accounts, Facebook, and even my banking accounts.

After thorough checks on my social media platforms and Gmail, I found no evidence of suspicious sign-ins, which provided a slight sense of relief. However, the anxiety of the situation was overwhelming. I even decided to respond to the email asking for clarification about the sender’s intentions.

Reflecting on this incident, I realize that I have reused this particular password across multiple platforms—definitely not a smart practice, especially since I consider myself an average user without significant assets to be concerned about. Still, the fear of my personal information being compromised is daunting.

At this point, I’m left contemplating the next steps. Should I report this to the police? I’m located in Australia, so I’m unsure how to proceed.
