Breathing New Life into an Old Laptop: A Gift for My Child
It’s remarkable how technology can be rejuvenated, and I’m excited to share my recent project: refurbishing my 12-year-old laptop. With a fresh installation of Ubuntu, this device is now primed to become my 4-year-old daughter’s first personal laptop. It offers a wonderful opportunity for her to embark on her typing and writing journey.
One of my main goals is to simplify her experience as she starts using it. I’m actively exploring options to configure the laptop so that it automatically launches a text editor upon startup. The idea is to eliminate the need for her to navigate a mouse—an unnecessary complication for a young learner.
Another feature I’m curious about is whether it’s possible to set the laptop to default with the Caps Lock key activated. This could potentially help her get accustomed to writing in uppercase letters without needing to toggle it manually.
Through this project, I’m not only providing my daughter with a useful tool for skill development but also showcasing how older devices can still serve important functions in our ever-evolving tech landscape. Stay tuned for updates as I continue to work on enhancing her new learning environment!
