Navigating the “Your Computer Has Been Locked Up” Scare: A Personal Encounter
Recently, my wife experienced a frustrating incident involving what is commonly referred to as the “your computer has been locked up” virus. This pestilent notification instructed her to call a number – 833-324-0303. When she reached out, the individual on the other end claimed to be from Microsoft.
Naturally, I advised her to restart the computer, as these pop-ups often stem from temporary glitches rather than serious threats.
Curious about this so-called Microsoft representative, she asked him for a website she could visit to verify his claims. His response was telling: “This is how we do it; having a website doesn’t help.” This statement alone raised several red flags regarding the legitimacy of his call.
Fortunately, my wife followed my suggestion and rebooted her Apple computer, which resolved the issue, and the warning message disappeared. Reflecting on similar experiences, I’ve encountered such notifications on my Windows machines every couple of years. In those instances, a simple restart has always been sufficient to clear the problem.
I’d love to hear from others who have faced similar situations. What steps did you take, and did you encounter any challenges during the process?
