Reviving an Old Laptop: A Gift for My Daughter’s Learning Journey

Today, I embarked on an exciting project: I successfully fixed up my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu, which will soon become my four-year-old daughter’s very first computer. With this initiative, I’m eager to provide her with a platform to learn typing and writing skills in a playful environment.

As I set everything up, I encountered a couple of questions that I believe could enhance her experience. First, I’m looking for the simplest way to configure the laptop to automatically launch a text editor upon startup. This would allow her to begin writing without having to navigate with a mouse — a task that might be a bit challenging for her at this age.

Additionally, I’m curious if there’s a way to have the laptop power on with the Caps Lock key activated. This feature could be beneficial as it might help her recognize the distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters more intuitively.
