Reviving a Classic: Transforming a 12-Year-Old Laptop into My Child’s First Learning Device

In today’s fast-paced tech landscape, it’s easy to overlook the potential of older devices. Recently, I undertook an ambitious project to breathe new life into my twelve-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. The goal? To create a user-friendly first laptop for my four-year-old daughter, helping her kickstart her journey in learning to type and express herself through writing.

One of my primary considerations is ensuring the laptop provides a straightforward experience for her, especially with her limited understanding of technology. To simplify navigation, I’m exploring ways to configure the laptop to boot directly into a text editor. This approach would allow her to focus on writing without needing to navigate complex menus or use a mouse just yet.

Additionally, I have a couple of other questions as I set this up. For instance, is there a way to configure the device to start with the Caps Lock enabled? This could facilitate easier interaction, especially for a young child still learning to familiarize herself with the keyboard.

As I embark on this project, I’m excited about the possibilities ahead. Not only will I be giving an old laptop a new purpose, but I’ll also be providing my daughter with a valuable tool for her early education.
