Reviving a Vintage Laptop: Setting Up an Ubuntu Experience for My Child

Recently, I embarked on a rewarding project: breathing new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This laptop will soon serve a special purpose as my 4-year-old daughter’s very first device. My hope is that it will provide her with a platform to learn the fundamentals of typing and writing.

Streamlining the User Experience

One of my primary objectives is to create an incredibly user-friendly interface that minimizes complexity, especially since she’s still getting accustomed to computers. I’m exploring ways to make sure the laptop opens directly into a text editor upon startup. This would allow her to dive right in without the need to navigate a desktop or utilize a mouse at this early stage. If anyone has insights or resources on how to set this up effectively, I would greatly appreciate the guidance!

Addressing Keyboard Preferences

Additionally, I’ve been pondering over another question: Is it possible to configure the system to have Caps Lock activated by default when it starts up? This small tweak could significantly enhance her initial typing experience as she learns letters and words with easily viewable capitalizations.
