Restored my 12-year-old laptop and set up Ubuntu—now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device to help her learn typing and writing. (Variation 87)

Reviving a Vintage Laptop for My Little One: A Ubuntu Transformation

In an exciting personal project, I recently breathed new life into my trusty 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This refurbished piece of technology will soon serve as the perfect introduction to computing for my four-year-old daughter. It’s rewarding to think she’ll be using it to learn the basics of typing and writing.

I’m on the lookout for ways to streamline her experience right from the start. My goal is to set the laptop to open directly into a text editor, allowing her to dive straight into her writing without needing to navigate with a mouse just yet. This will not only make the learning process smoother but will also encourage her to express her creativity freely.

Additionally, I have a question regarding the device’s setup: Is it possible to have the laptop boot up with the Caps Lock activated? This could be a handy feature as she gets accustomed to using the keyboard.

If you have any tips for optimizing this setup or insights into keyboard configurations for young learners, I’d love to hear your suggestions! Thank you for joining me on this journey of nurturing my daughter’s skills with technology.
