Restored My 12-Year-Old Laptop and Installed Ubuntu — Now It’s My 4-Year-Old’s First Device for Learning to Type and Write

Breathing New Life into an Old Laptop: A Perfect Starter for My Child

In an exciting endeavor to make the most out of technology, I recently revived a 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This refurbished machine is set to become my 4-year-old child’s very first laptop, providing her with a fantastic opportunity to learn typing and writing in a fun and engaging way.

One of my main goals is to create a user-friendly environment for her, which raised a few questions during set up. I’m looking for the simplest method to ensure the laptop opens directly into a text editor. This way, she won’t need to grapple with mouse controls just yet, allowing her to focus on developing her writing skills straight away.

Additionally, I’m curious about whether it’s possible to have the laptop automatically start with Caps Lock enabled. This could further simplify her typing experience in the beginning stages.

As I navigate these configurations, I’m excited about the potential this laptop holds for sparking my child’s interest in technology and education. Stay tuned for updates on her progress and tips for making tech accessible to young learners!
