The Twisted Dance of Steam and Origin: A Gamer’s Dilemma
Hello, fellow gamers!
Today, I’m excited to share a rather frustrating experience I’ve had while trying to immerse myself in some delightful new video games. As someone who has navigated the realms of various gaming platforms, I found myself ensnared in an all-too-common trap between Steam and Origin. While each platform has its strengths, the synergy—or lack thereof—between them can lead to perplexing problems.
The Setup
Recently, I purchased three exciting titles through Steam, confident that my system could handle them with ease. However, a curveball quickly emerged. To launch these games, I was required to open the Origin client due to EA’s policy, which prevents direct launches through Steam. Initially, the transition seemed manageable. But things took a turn when Origin failed to recognize that the games were already installed on my hard drive.
The Dilemma
Imagine my dismay when the Origin client insisted I needed to download the game for the first time—even after successfully downloading it via Steam. Trying to go through the download process on Origin led to one of two frustrating outcomes:
-
If the game wasn’t installed yet, Origin would attempt to force an installation through Steam.
-
If the game was already installed, I received an error message indicating that the download couldn’t proceed, asking me to try again.
This scenario left me at a frustrating standstill. Despite reaching out to EA’s customer support team, I soon learned that standard uninstallation and reinstallation processes were the only suggested solutions. After going through this painful procedure, I faced an additional three-day wait for the game to download once more, a challenge compounded by the sluggish Australian internet speeds.
A Flicker of Hope?
When I contacted another EA representative, I hoped for a breakthrough. They walked me through some troubleshooting steps to address potential issues on Steam’s end, such as clearing the download cache and repairing the Steam library folders. I meticulously followed their advice and, to my surprise, Origin finally acknowledged that the game was installed. However, this moment of triumph was short-lived.
Attempting to launch the game resulted in a peculiar outcome: while the game initiated a first-time setup through Steam, it ultimately left me hanging—Origin reset itself and sent me back to the homepage. The game simply refused to play, leaving me exasperated and confused.
