Restored my 12-year-old laptop, installed Ubuntu, and now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device to learn typing and writing.

Reviving a Vintage Laptop: A Learning Tool for My Child

In an age where technology evolves at lightning speed, it’s remarkable what can be accomplished with older hardware. Recently, I breathed new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu, and I’m excited to share that this device will serve as the first laptop for my four-year-old daughter. It’s a perfect opportunity for her to learn the fundamentals of typing and writing.

One of the challenges I am currently facing is how to set up the laptop to boot directly into a text editor. This would enable her to begin her writing journey without the need to navigate using a mouse, simplifying the user experience for her as she familiarizes herself with the keyboard.

Additionally, I’ve been pondering whether it’s possible to have the laptop start with the Caps Lock enabled by default. This might further ease her typing experience, especially as she gets accustomed to the keyboard layout.

I’m looking forward to watching my daughter explore this new tool and develop her skills in a nurturing, tech-friendly environment. If anyone has suggestions or solutions regarding the startup configuration or user-friendly text editors suitable for young learners, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
